Our Governors
Alison Schulte
Chair of Governors
I became a governor at Christchurch in March 2016 and was elected Chair in September of the same year. I serve on both the Teaching and Learning and Finance and Resources committees and am the designated link governor for Safeguarding and Child Protection. I have a strong Christian faith and represent the Parish Council of Christ Church with St Laurence on the Governing Board.
I live very close to the school and my association with it goes back over 20 years as my son, (Alexander) , was a pupil here from 1998,when he started in Nursery through to 2006 when he finished Year 6.
My whole working career was in education. After 10 years working as a teacher of modern languages in two comprehensive schools in Hertfordshire, I moved to North West London in the late 1980s and eventually became a Deputy Headteacher in a secondary school in the borough of Camden. I retired from teaching in 2015. I hold a lifelong belief in the power of a good education to transform lives and enable every child to fulfil their potential. It is a great privilege to be able to serve as a governor at Christchurch and to contribute to its continued success as a school.
Retirement has allowed me time for my many interests and hobbies : among them , foreign travel, learning Spanish, reading, theatre and cinema, walking, cycling, swimming and Pilates.

An introduction to the Governing Body of our school
Christ Church School is a Voluntary-Aided Foundation school in the London Borough of Brent. It has a very long connection with the Parish Church, Christ Church with St. Lawrence, Brondesbury, whose Rector founded the school in 1889.
Our Governors are volunteers appointed by the Parish Church Council (PCC), Brent Deanery, The Diocese of London and the Local Authority (Brent). There are also Governors elected by the parents and staff. We serve for 4 years, but it is possible to stand for re-election at the end of that period. As you will see from our list, Governors come from many different backgrounds and walks of life and bring a whole range of knowledge and skills. All have one thing in common – along-standing interest in education and a commitment to making Christ Church a school where all can flourish in their learning and personal development.
Our role
All Governing Bodies have 3 core strategic functions:
- To ensure the school has a clear vision and ethos and is ambitious for its pupils
- To hold the Headteacher to account for the performance of the school and the pupils and the Performance Management of staff
- To oversee the financial performance of the school and ensure its money is well spent
In practice, that means we work closely with the Headteacher and other leaders in the school to set high expectations for the children so that they make excellent progress and achieve the best outcomes possible. We also ensure that all the correct procedures are in place for keeping children safe at school and that these are monitored regularly.
We have regular meetings and visit the school to make sure we know how it runs on a day-to-day basis. Every Governor is linked to an area of the school or the curriculum. Some Governors also support the Headteacher by meeting with teams from the Diocese or Brent to ensure standards are rigorously monitored.
At our meetings we receive detailed reports from the Headteacher and other staff about targets, achievements and progress of the pupils and what the school is doing to improve even further. We expect to support the Leadership Team in setting its priorities for development and reviewing progress regularly. Our role is to ask probing questions as “critical friends”, to challenge expectations and , where necessary, suggest improvements. In this way we are holding the school to account and helping staff to make it even better.
The Governors support the Leadership Team in setting the budget each year and are then responsible for agreeing it. We receive regular updates on the budget throughout the year and aim to ensure that resources are being used in a way that leads to the best outcomes for the children.
What can you do to support us?
We believe that a STRONG PARTNERSHIP between the school, the family and the child is key to a child’s success, as is excellent attendance and a positive attitude to learning.
We ask you to support your child to be the best that she or he can be by reinforcing our high expectations. We want you all to encourage your children to attend every day, on time and to show a positive, determined attitude to learning and respectful behaviour.
If you are interested in joining us, or have any questions, please contact me via the school office.
