National Windrush Day
Windrush Celebrations!
Today is National Windrush day. Let’s give thanks to our parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts who were brave enough to leave their homeland and give us the lives we all have today.

Nursery
Nursery learnt about when the 'Empire Windrush' came to Great Britain and thought about the feelings of the people who were leaving their families and everyone they had ever known in order to start a new life in a country they had never been to. Then, we role-played travelling on the Windrush!
Reception
We learnt about when the 'Empire Windrush' came to Great Britain. We thought about the feelings of the people who were leaving their families and everyone they had ever known in order to start a new life in a country they had never been to. We acted out waving goodbye to our friends and family and arriving in the UK.
We found out that some people in Great Britain were not very welcoming to the people when they arrived and that made us feel sad.
Year 1 and 2
Many Caribbean men and women travelled on the HMT Empire Windrush ship from Jamaica all the way the Tilbury here in England. Children from year 1 and 2 designed their own ship to commemorate the day!

Year 5 and 6
For people who had already settled in Britain, one way of supporting each other and building a community was to offer advice to fellow Caribbeans who hadn’t yet made the journey.
Year 5 and 6 made their own pamphlets giving advice to new arrivals!
